Kaminoseki Shinmei Festival

Kaminoseki Shinmei Festival

This festival is thought to have begun with Kobayakawa Takakage who ordered the construction of a Shintai (an object of worship) for victory in war and prayed to the god of war. In 1604 the senior statesman Ura Kagetsugu of the Kobayakawa clan granted territory to Shimonoseki and changed residence. The Kamonoseki Shinmei Festival is held every year since this time and has a tradition of over 400 years. After the oblation including pounding mochi and Kaguara, ancient Shinto music and dancing, the 10 m tall Shintai is lit. The image of the Shintai vigorously bursting into flames leaves a big impression.
