Kishimi Stone Bath

Kishimi Stone Bath

Kishimi stone bath was built by priest Chogen on the remaining site of a forest after timber got cut for Todaiji temple's construction.

Consists of a stone room made with piled up granite, 4.4m in width, 3.6m in depth, 1.8m in height. The floor is covered by gravels and the whole room is protected by a thatched roof.

The sauna is prepared by firing twigs inside the room, then scrape them out of the room and spreading a wet straw mat. This style is used by many other saunas in Sabakawa area.

The festival for priest Chogen "Ishiburo Kaizan-ki" is held annually on 5th June to thank him as a founder of the stone bath. A statue of him is standing between the resting room and the main building.
