- Kintaikyo Cormorant Fishing
In the picturesque setting of the Nishiki River, Yamaguchi Prefecture's largest river, you can experience the summer tradition known as "cormorant fishing" aboard a yakatabune (traditional Japanese houseboat). The origin of cormorant fishing date back approximately 400 years. Against the backdrop of the Kintaikyo Bridge, skilled cormorant fishermen don ancient attire, including raven hats and straw skirt. Their adept handling of the cormorants using hand-held ropes is truly impressive. As night falls, the glow of the cormorant boats' torches reflects on the river's surface, creating a mystical scene. On the yakatabune, you can hear the cormorants' calls and feel the warmth of the torches as you witness this traditional ayu (sweetfish) fishing up close, all while enjoying the view of the renowned Kintaikyo Bridge.
