Goldfish lanterns with a red and white body, large black eyes and a funny face. Japanese paper is pasted onto the frame made of split bamboo and colored red and black with dye. Today the goldfish lanterns decorate the white walls of the townscape as a feature of the summer. The red goldfish with their large tails are somehow humorous and loved by many people.
Their charming appearance has ranked high in the Japanese ranking of folk craft and has developed to being one of Yamaguchi Prefectures representative folk crafts. It is popular among many people as a souvenir of sightseeing in Yanai or as interior.
