Hofu Tenman-gu Shrine

1. Hofu Tenman-gu Shrine

This shrine was Japan’s first Tenmangu shrine for the god of learning Michizane Sugawara. The other two shrines for Michizane Sugawara are Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka. These three shrines are collectively referred to as Japan’s Three Tenjin Shrines.
Shinsaku Takasugi’s dying words expressed adoration for Michizane.
Multitudes of visitors come throughout the year to celebrate New Year, enjoy the Plum Festival in early spring, and observe western Japan’s roughest Shinko Festival that is a Hadakabo Festival, which refers to a ‘naked’ festival where men dress in loincloth.
